Toshiba's Hydropower Equipment is under full-fledged Operation in NTPC's first prestigious Koldam Hydro Power Plant (4 x 200MW)

Francis Turbines and Hydraulic Generators designed and developed by Toshiba Corporation along with Marubeni Corporation consummate full-scale commercial operations of Koldam Hydropower Electric Project in July 2015. Toshiba, as Technical Leader, was responsible for Technology and Design of Turbine and Generator and supplied the main critical products such as Runner, Generator parts etc. and commissioned the plant along with its main partner – Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). NTPC Limited, India's largest Central Governmentowned energy service provider, had started commercial operation of all four units of 200MW each for Koldam HEP in Himachal Pradesh. Koldam Hydropower Electric Project is the first prestigious Hydro project of NTPC.

Recently, effective utilization of hydropower has returned to recognition worldwide, due to its high generating efficiency and low emission of CO2 which is major contributor of global warming. Hydropower is one of the most economical sources of renewable energy, with the reduced maintenance cost as compared to thermal power and having the characteristics of coping with the rapid fluctuations in energy demand within minimal amount of time.

Toshiba Group has supplied over 2,200 hydraulic turbines with over 56,000MW and over 1,700 hydraulic generators with over 72,000MVA generating capacity around the world for over 120 years. In India, Toshiba delivered 4x10.5MW hydroelectric equipment to Umiam-I HEP in Meghalaya in 1965. Since then, the company has supplied and installed over 20 hydro turbines and over 30 hydro generators for 50 years in India.
